Gym intimidation is such a brutal thing, to the point where it keeps people from even going. I’ve been going to the gym consistently for the last 6 weeks and I still deal with it. Even just tonight, there’s one particular group of girls that frequent at the gym who make me cringe. I don’t know if it’s because they’re all thin and gorgeous, or because they spend less time working out and more time hitting on the trainers. Either way… there has been a few times I’ve walked into one of the weight rooms, seen them, and walked right back out.
But gym intimidation is such a bull shit thing! Why should someone be embarrassed or scared to be doing something so great for themselves? I doesn’t make any sense. And yet it prevents so many people from going to the gym. SO. I wanted to chat about some things we can do to help avoid gym intimidation! Here are my thoughts:
1// Buddy up. Safety in numbers right?
2// Take the time to put together a bomb playlist before getting the gym. It’ll help motivate you, and help you focus more on jamming out than side-eyeing everyone.
4// Plan your workout ahead of time. Rather than wandering around trying to figure out what to do, write out a plan for yourself. You’ll spend more time actually working out than looking lost.
5// This next idea I actually got from Ange with Hairspray and Highheels. She suggested taking photos of the names of the weight machines, and googling how to use them once you’re home. That way you’re not headed into the gym totally blind! I think this is pretty brilliant.
6// If you can, go during weird hours of the day to avoid the after work 5:30 rush. A quiet gym will give you the chance to get to know it a little better without having to search for open equipment.’
7// This is a pretty basic one… just focus on you. You are there for YOURSELF and no one else. Keep slaying.
